Special Diamond Jubilee Edition!

Jubilee Tea Party - Saturday 2nd June

www.needhamlink.co.uk

From the Editor
There isn’t much room for my piece in this edition as we have new contributors in addition to the regulars and we also have a lot of information about the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the village. There will also be regular updates on the Jubilee Celebration on www.needhamlink.co.uk so do keep logging on. We have had over 400 page views since it went ‘live’.
This is your village newsletter so please feel free to offer a contribution either by posting it through my letter box at Mill Farm Cottage, by email at needhamlink@gmail.com or by posting on the website/blog. I look forward to hearing from you!
The deadline for inclusion in The Link is 14 June.
Helen

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor
I’ve been asked by my tail wagging friends to comment on a  proverbial problem.  We have been getting a lot of bad press recently due to some inconsiderate and lazy owners who show scant regard to human health and flout the law by not cleaning up our ‘poo’.    It makes me growl especially as my master always tidies up using plastic poo bags which he then places in the dog waste bins which, I understand,  the Parish Council pays to have emptied.
We do a lot of good.  I have friends who make life bearable and enjoyable for their blind or deaf owners.  Innumerable more give comfort, warmth and companionship to many, particularly the lonely.
So let’s have a concerted campaign in our village against these inconsiderate owners who give us a bad name and care little for society.  Shame on them!
I’m happily barking and going walkies.
Rover (your best friend)
The Editor welcomes letters! Put them through the letter box at Mill Farm Cottage

Going from Strength to Strength    by Emily Orford
Upper Body Blitz
In this month’s Needham Link, we take a look at the press up, an effective exercise for strengthening and toning the muscles in the arms, chest and shoulders. A stronger upper body will
help make every day activities like carrying the shopping or digging the garden that much easier.
Press up - standing (easier option)
  • Find a suitable wall that is solid enough to take your body weight
  • Stand facing the wall with your feet hip width apart and stretch out your arms so that you palms are flat against the wall
  • Your hands should be at the same height as your shoulders
  • Slowly bend your elbows and move your body towards the wall
  • Aim to get your nose as close to the wall as possible
  • Now, slowly push yourself back to the starting position
  • You can make this exercise harder by standing with your feet further away from the wall
Press up – floor (harder option)
  • Kneel on all fours with the hands a little wider than shoulder width apart
  • Straighten your legs out behind you so that your weight is distributed between your hands and toes
  • Bend the elbows outwards to lower the chest towards the floor
  • Push back up to the starting position
  • To make the floor press up exercise easier, maintain the all four position and lower your chest to the floor aiming to get your nose past your finger tips
Aim to perform approximately 8-12 repetitions in each set and aim to build up the number of sets to 2-3 per session.
Emily runs weekly fitness classes, £4 per class, no booking required. Please call Emily on 07946 353731 or just turn up and give it a go!

All change at Borderhoppa!
Due to council regulations, from the 2nd April, we have to make some changes as we’ve been granted a `flexibly routed local bus service.’  We will still operate in the same areas, still cover over 60 parishes & still pick you up from your door to take you to the shops, doctors, hairdressers, to visit a friend or anywhere else in our local area that you need to go. The difference will be that our friendly service is now available to everyone.
We also have to make some changes to our fare structure: Norfolk & Suffolk concessionary bus pass holders can now both enjoy free travel with us, but only if they travel after 9.30am.
For non bus pass holders in Norfolk any return journey 1-15 miles will be £5. For those in Suffolk it will range from £2.80-£6.20 return, depending on the distance travelled.
We will now also be offering single fares.
Bookings must be made at least 2 days before you want to travel, but no more than 4 working days in advance.
This can be done by ringing our office Monday – Friday between 8.30am – 5pm on 01379 854800.
As usual we will be running regular outings on Mondays throughout the year, starting with:

Return to Village Life
Growing up in Needham was an idyllic life full of village fetes, jumble sales, Needham Shows full of jovial sketches and a certain buzz about the village that oozed community spirit. I grew up in the Old Vicarage in the 1980’s/1990’s with my family and remember before the by-pass when the High Road was the main road to Great Yarmouth.  It was noisy, busy and took forever to get out of your drive; a far cry from the peaceful road we have now. I have fond memories of playing pooh sticks at the mill and sledging with village friends on Mill Hill, an event that the snow this February allowed us to revisit.  The regular Needham Show seemed to bring a host of excellent (and some dubious) talent out from the woodwork. I remember taking part in a variety of sketches, from ‘Watch with Mother’ to ‘Allo Allo’ and even being a human cannonball in the ‘Circus comes to Needham’.   We moved from the village to central Norwich where, as a teenager, I enjoyed the thrill of city living but I always felt that village life was calling me back.
So after nearly 20 years away from the village including living in Austria and Kent I find myself renovating my dear Grandmother’s bungalow and starting a new life here in Needham. It feels as though the village is blossoming again. In just one year of living back in Needham, we have seen a host of events including Cheese and Wine evening, the Summer BBQ, the Village Bunting project, a Christmas Quiz Night and a the Great Cake Bake. This summer we have the exciting Royal Jubilee party which promises to be a right royal knees up.
I am so pleased to come back to my roots, and even more so because I bring with me my husband, Joe, and our baby son, Elliot who is just a few weeks old and who I know will love growing up in such a wonderful village. So, when my city friends ask me why we moved to the country, there is simply one answer …. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this wonderful community and I tell them how proud I am to be part of this village life too.

Needham Parish Council
A full meeting of Parish Councillors was held on 17 March.  It was reported at the meeting that, as part of the Waveney Valley Project, the village is to have new name signs.  These will incorporate the speed limit in what is called a Mantle Clock type sign.  It is hoped that this arrangement will serve to emphasize the importance of keeping to the speed limit through the village.
The signs will also incorporate the logo that has been specially designed for the Waveney Valley towns and villages.
Planning Approvals:
111 High Road: Listed Building Consent has been granted for single and two storey extensions and repairs.
1 Brook Lane: A single storey rear extension has been approved.
Planning applications considered by the Parish Council
83 High Road: conversion of outbuilding for residential use and erection of carport
91 High Road: amendment to Listed Building Consent; addition of double glazed doors and enlargement of retained window.
The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Monday 28 May in the Coronation Village Hall.  This will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting at 7.00pm.  All Parish Councillors invite you to join us to when the Chairman will present a report on the previous years activities.
Contact details for your Parish Councillors can be found at www.needhamlink.co.uk or on the Parish notice boards.
