Farewell to Caroline Dear & Karen Smith who have moved away from Needham. During their years in the village Caroline was a key member of the Village Hall Committee and Karen served on the Parish Council. Christmas Trees
Sue Elsden at White House Farm is selling Christmas trees again this year. They will will be available as usual at White House Farm from Saturday 30th Nov everyday from 9am to 5pm. They are all locally grown and there will be the usual selection of Norway Spruce, Nordmann and Blue Spruce in various sizes from 3ft to 13ft and smaller potted trees. Plain or decorated wreaths will also be on sale.

Letters to the Editor
Why should anyone be concerned about the church closing! It seems that religion has caused more hatred and death in the world for what it is worth. Perhaps it’s the Friends of St Peter`s who are concerned more than most. When it does close, why not convert the church into flats and the Friends can all move in together and get some return for their money? Please don't ask people to attend church.

How lucky Needham is to have a "Motoring Correspondent". Shame no one knows who he is!! It wasn’t until I drove pass SAM that I realised what the dial in my car was for. I have been driving a car for many years with a speedometer, so thanks SAM . Like SAM it tells me what speed I am travelling at, so thanks SAM. The sad thing is that looking at SAM I nearly crashed into an oncoming car, so thanks SAM. Perhaps they could invent a WET SAM to tell us when it’s raining or a SNOW SAM to remind us that it’s winter, so thanks SAM.

Village Hall Committee
The last edition of the Link contained a request to let us know if anyone in the village would be interested in joining a group to help restore and run the children’s play area. Unfortunately, we received no response and it was therefore resolved at the October committee meeting to dismantle the existing play area. However, action will be held off until after the November meeting.
Needham Village Parish Council
At the Parish Council meeting held on 23rd September it was announced that both Paul Bird and Karen Smith had stepped down as Parish Councillors. This means there are now two Casual Vacancies on the Parish Council.
A Casual Vacancy means that we are now able to co-opt new Councillors. To qualify to be a Parish Councillor it is necessary to be an elector in Needham, or hold property in the village.
The Parish Council meets every two months. We are able to assist residents maintain a link with the work of both South Norfolk District Council and also with Norfolk Council on wider issues such as highway maintenance. In both these areas we enjoy the significant support of our District and County Councillors.
We would welcome any resident who cares for the running of our community and would be interested in joining the Parish Council to contact either myself, telephone 852958, or the Parish Clerk Philip Freeman, telephone number 783203.
We are extremely grateful to Karen, who has moved out of the village, and to Paul who, for several years filled the role of Chairman, for the support they have given to the Parish.
The next Parish Council meeting will be on Monday 2 December at 7:30pm in the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend and to raise any issues at the public forum.

Local Radio for Harleston (& Needham?)
Harleston and the surrounding villages could have their own local radio station! As a result, residents will be involved and entertained, and Harleston and other nearby Waveney Valley businesses will have a new, cost effective and highly-focussed advertising medium. With the support of the ‘Harleston’s Future’ partnership, Park Radio have agreed to include Harleston and its environs in their imminent licence application, provided it can be proved viable.

Needham Carpet Bowls Club
Our friendly match played at home against Cratfield was won by a few shots and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.
The Winter League has now started and we have played an away match against Kenninghall. Although we won one game and drew one game, Kenninghall were the eventual winners.
On 1 October a team of five players from our club competed in the knock-out cup at Wortwell. Unfortunately Needham lost all our games.
On 11 October seven club members attended the Summer League Presentation & Quiz Evening held at Alburgh Village Hall. This too was a very enjoyable evening.
Unfortunately, one of our long time members has decided to leave the club.
Our club evenings are held at Needham Village Hall every Wednesday evening beginning at 7:30pm. New members are very welcome so do come along and join us. Membership is £2 per year. Fees are £1.50 and all equipment is provided. Tea / coffee and biscuits are included in the fees.

Sue Massey is proposing to restart the Village coffee mornings at the Red Lion on the first
Tuesday of each month, the first being Tuesday 5 November. Sue would like to invite everyone from Needham & Brockdish to come for coffee and a chat from 10:00am to 12 noon. Please drop in - bring a friend. Cakes which can be used for a raffle prize or sold to boost takings are very welcome!

Harleston's Special Attractions
Harleston may be a small town but it has big ambitions and is determined to buck the trend of failing High Streets. The latest manifestation of this is a new Harleston Shop Guide, which spotlights fifty-five independent businesses offering everything from antiques and auto parts to Zumba classes and Zanussi dishwashers.
‘The point we are trying to make’ comments Sue Smith of ‘Home Comforts’, who co-ordinated the guide with her colleagues Rachel Smith and Cindy Debenham, ‘is that people don’t have to trek to Norwich or Ipswich to get what they want, it’s all here in Harleston. Unlike buying on-line you can see the quality of an item, get advice from experienced staff and have an enjoyable experience. I think that is worth a lot.’
The team from ‘Home Comforts’ got a lot of support from the local shopkeepers and other businesses. The guide was designed for free by Carly Newton and Kieran Robinson from Pen & Paper* as a gesture of goodwill.

Harry Peters
Harry Peters (1920-2013)
We are sad to report that Harry Peters of 125 High Road has died at the age of 93 years.
Harry had lived in Needham for 50 years.
Harry had served as a sergeant in the Air Ministry police in Pulham. He was a Normandy veteran and had entered the Belsen concentration camp when it was liberated at the end of the World War II.
Harry had trained as an architect. One structure he designed, the bus shelter in Broad Street Harleston, is probably well known to many residents. He was also an accomplished water colourist’
Harry was married to Bea who pre-deceased him in 2007.

Plants vary in their ability to survive the winter unscathed. Many borderline-hardy plants will require protection from penetrating frosts and cold winds. Others can cope with the cold but are prone to rotting if the soil remains wet for long periods. Even hardy plants can struggle to survive a cold snap if they have only recently been planted. Plants in containers are, perhaps, the most vulnerable of all since both their top-growth and root zone can freeze solid during prolonged sub-zero temperatures and the pot may be damaged too. Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to help your plants survive the winter. The ones you choose should depend on the plants you are trying to protect.

Long Term Care Planning
You have parents who are likely at some time to need long term care. This is very expensive; £500 a week (£26,000 a year) is not excessive in this part of the world at present, and may even be on the conservative side. And that's just for one of them. Unless you are very poor indeed, this is what it will cost them.
Your parents worked hard to buy their house so the moment you start thinking about it, you can see your inheritance disappearing all too quickly as it needs to be sold to pay for the care. What was that; you thought the NHS was 'free at the point of delivery'?
Sorry, it doesn't work like that for long term care. If they have the money, they have to pay up, sooner or later.
But it doesn't need to be like that; all you have to do is plan ahead to stop the house being sold, or a mortgage being placed on it by the Council so they can get the money when your parents have died and the house has been sold. If the long term care bill is greater than the value of the house, what then?
The problem is that most people don't plan ahead to stop the worst happening, which results in thousands and thousands of homes being sold every year to pay for the care. Why is this ? Why don't people do something about it ? I don't know, but you and your parents don't need to be one of them.
There are plenty of (fixed fee) legal steps you and your parents can take to preserve your inheritance; the trouble is, most people leave it too late, or don't bother at all.
So I just need to say again; you need to plan in advance, before the care is needed, if you want to keep your inheritance.

Ladies’ Tractor Road Run
I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those in Needham - friends and people I had never met - who sponsored me for the Tractor Run on 7 July. It was an amazing day with crowds lining the lanes and the Thoroughfare in Harleston despite there being other attractions such as Wimbledon. I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who contributed towards the fantastic sum of £800 which has gone to Cancer Research UK, a really worthwhile charity. Thank you!

Letter to the Editor
Are the residents of our village aware that our church is not in a very good position. Is this the start of the decline that has happened to other churches? Perhaps over the next few years we may not even have our church open for services, baptisms, marriages and funerals. It would be such a shame if this did happen as the Friends of St Peter’s worked so hard to have work done on the roof, chancel etc in order to preserve the building.
I, for one, know it is not easy to juggle work, social life, family, shopping etc in this busy world we live in but if more people do not try to attend some of the services in the church then the worst case scenario will happen and we will see our church door locked for good.
So please try to attend a service now and again. You will be warmly greeted at any time.

Cynthia (Cindy) Asprey
We are sad to report that, after a long illness, Cindy died peacefully in her sleep on Monday 12 August. A service in celebration of her life was held at St Peter’s on 20 August.
Cindy was an active member of our community and Needham Village has a great deal to thank her for. She was a member of the Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee and played a great part in raising the funds for and seeing through the building of the new extension to the Village Hall.
Cindy was born during the 2nd World War at Ripley Court School. The pupils had been evacuated and the school was being used as a maternity hospital. Cindy was herself evacuated later to Raunds near Northampton where her love of the country began.
She was brought up in Woodford Green in Essex, passed the 11+ and was educated at St Mary’s Convent Grammar School. After school she worked as a secretary for British Aerospace in London.
With her first husband, Gordon Hartnell, Cindy spent 2 years in Australia and 2 years in Mexico. Her biggest joy was the birth of her twin boys, Alistair and Richard and later her daughter, Kate.
Cindy had a love of learning, history and especially gardening. Her plant knowledge was extensive.
In 2003 Cindy and her husband, Colin, came to live in Needham.
She spent the weekend before she died with the people she loved - her children and Colin.
Cindy was a very loving, kind and supportive friend to many. She will be sorely missed but her presence will live on in the memories we all share of her.

The Friends of St Peter’s Cake Bake results were encouraging. The entries (sadly only 8 plus one junior) were judged by the Rev Nigel & Mrs Tuffnell and a splendid job they made of it too. After judging the cakes the Rev Nigel turned his hand to auctioneering which raised a profit of £61. Well done to those who took part - both the bakers and the bidders!

Annual BBQ report
Thank you once again to everyone who joined us for the Summer BBQ this year. Once again, it was a great day; the sun shone as we listened to Dougie Archer singing and we were entertained with games and enjoyed a great BBQ and bar. We raised £521.91 which will go towards the on-going refurbishment of the Village Hall.
The Committee would like to say thank you, in no particular order, to Rev Nigel Tuffnell for his sterling work calling the raffle, Paul Lewis at HLC Wood Craft Needham for his generous donation towards prizes, to Denis Casey & Jenny Collyer for allowing us to use their BBQ (again!), Mr Coe for the use of his field for parking, everyone who donated raffle prizes and last, but no means least to our dedicated helpers who worked so hard on the day and without whom we would not be able to hold such an event.

Speed Awareness Machine
SAM
Did you spot SAM when driving through Needham? We hope so. The machine displays the speed of approaching vehicles and warns drivers to slow down if they are exceeding the speed limit. It also records the speed of all vehicles. This can then be analysed to identify if there are problem periods when there is persistent speeding.
The speed limit outside the Village Hall is 30mph and unfortunately ‘slow down’ lit up all too frequently. Happily the majority of drivers, although not all, did just that.
SAM is loaned from the Council and is in great demand with Parishes around South Norfolk. We hope to be able to borrow him again to provide a gentle reminder to observe the speed limit. Many thanks to the team that sat with SAM while he was on duty.

At the meeting held on Tuesday 29th July the Parish Council agreed to investigate the cost of additional dog bins for Needham. As well as the initial purchase price of the bins we currently pay Environmental Services £120 a year to empty the bins. This comes out of the Parish precept, and this would increase with additional bins. Suggested locations are an additional bin on the High Road, and also on Upper Burnt House Lane on the north side of the A143, which is a popular area for dog walks.
There were reports of locations where hedgerows and trees are causing obstruction, and in some cases possibly danger, such as the thick growth on the Harleston roundabout that obscures the view of oncoming traffic. A request has been sent to the Highways Department to cut back undergrowth where necessary.
The Parish Council was again able to provide advice and support to a resident on problems of surface water drainage. All Parishioners are welcome to attend the Public Meeting when we also benefit from the advice and support of our County and District Councillors.
The next meeting will be held at the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 23 September.

Needham Petanque
The new Needham Petanque court at the Red Lion held its inaugural match during August. It was a fantastic sunny afternoon with plenty of locals turning out to take part. It was a huge amount of fun and everyone was both encouraged and welcomed to take part. The nature of the game means that all ages and skill levels can play together which makes it even more fun.
Get down to the Red Lion and give it a go and see if we can make this the start of a Needham Petanque Team. Trust me, there were many more bad players than good, which made it all the more fun!

Since our last report the Club Singles matches have been completed. The winners were Jane Debattista (Ladies) and Lenny Whymark (Gents).
The Pairs Competition is now in progress.
The AGM for the South Norfolk Federation Carpet Bowls held at Old Buckenham Village Hall on 10 July was attended by two members from Needham. The draw for the Winter League was made. Needham will be playing against Brockdish, Garboldisham, Kenninghall, Occold and Syleham.
In the Knock Out Cup we have been drawn against Wortwell.
All the matches are on a home & away basis.
On 2 August twelve members visited Cratfield Bowls Club for a friendly match. The return match is at Needham on 20 September.
We are very pleased to have two new members - we give a very warm welcome to Celia & Deb. I am sure they will have many pleasant evenings bowling.

Needham Art Group will be holding their Annual Art Exhibition in the Village Hall on Saturday 7th September from 10a.m. until 4p.m. There will also be various craft stalls and, of course, Robbie will be supplying her usual delicious drinks and snacks.
We will be delighted to see you all. Free admission.

So far this year our members have enjoyed trips to Gt Yarmouth, Stowmarket, Lowestoft, Gorleston, Pulham Garden Centre & lunches at The White Horse, Stoke Ash & The Half Moon, Rushall. There are still many more outings to look forward to, with trips to Aldeburgh & Thorpeness, Wroxham, Rushall Gardens, Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Beccles, Ely, boat trips on the Broads & pub lunches to name just a few!
Why not become a member and join the others and make some new friends on one or more days out?

If you don’t fancy a day out but would just like to book a trip for shopping, doctors etc, them give us a call. We also hire our mini buses for private hire days, evenings & weekends.

The BBQ at the Village Hall was a great success - thanks to the hard work behind the scenes by the Village Hall Committee. The food, drink and music was well received together with the weather. It made me consider that for a small village we are very lucky to have such a useful Hall and a comfortable Church. However, with changing times we must not just accept that the Hall and Church as a right will always be available. So please help by attending village activities.
With the above in mind there will be a churchyard tidy up on Saturday 17th November 9:30 to 12.30.
