    Needham Village Link

January/February 2017

From the Editor

Happy New Year to you all.  Here’s hoping that 2017 will deliver fewer shocks than 2016.

There is an important Village meeting regarding Needham Action Group’s Community project at the Village Hall on Sunday 5 February from 2pm to 5pm. Details can be found on the back page of this Link.

Village Information File
In 2011 the Parish Council distributed a pamphlet listing village organisations and contacts to every household.  So much has changed in five years that it is time to re-issue it.  This time The PC would also like to include details of anyone in the village who offers a service.  This could be anything from babysitting to professional services. If you would like to be included please send your contact details to Andrew Major at andrewmajor@mac.com  drop them off at Mill Farm Cottage, Mill Lane or bring them to the next Parish Council meeting on Monday 16 January.

You may recall that I have been appealing for a volunteer to take over the editorship of the Link.  So far, I have had one offer to guest edit which I have very gratefully accepted.  If there is anyone else out there who fancies turning his or her hand to editing please contact me at needhamlinkk@gmail.com In the event of nobody wanting to take over I am afraid that the Link may cease to exist.

We are looking for a volunteer to help with the administration of the defibrillator that is positioned on the wall of the Red Lion.  If you would like details of what is involved please email needhamlink@gmail.com or phone John Morrish on 01379851171

Needham Parish Council

 meeting 21 November 2016

A well attended public forum held before the Parish Council meeting raised a number of issues that concern us all.  A report was received from a resident of thefts in the village from a store of firewood.  The cost of firewood has risen hugely in the last few years which makes it a lucrative target.  Stores of firewood are often in the open and away from the house making them difficult to secure, but it is worth looking at your security arrangements to see what can be done to deter potential thieves.  If you have clear evidence that wood has been taken it should be reported to the police.  A report was also received of aggressive behaviour by doorstep scammers.  This is a problem that is particularly targeted at the elderly.  There is a separate article in this edition of the Link with advice on this matter.

Other residents at the meeting sought advice from Parish Councillors on a persistent humming noise and on a planning application, which is a reminder that it is part of a Parish Councillors role to improve the quality of life and the environment in their area.

At the Parish Council meeting I was able to report that the joint acquisition with Brockdish of a SAM 2 speed machine is back on track.  It is expected it will be available next spring.  The meeting also discussed the dual problem of lack of early morning buses into Harleston that compels residents to walk into town and the hazard of crossing the A143 at the roundabout.  Initial response from the Highways Authority to improving the crossing was negative but we shall write again to ask if it is possible for the Parish Council to contribute funds towards, at the very least, improved white lining and also to Simmonds who now run the 581 Bus.

A draft of an electoral review of South Norfolk has recommended that Needham should be relocated in the District Council that includes Harleston, Redenhall and Wortwell.  The Parish Council will be writing to object strongly as we have far more in common with Brockdish and adjoining villages.  Should you also wish to make an objection you can do so by logging onto www.consultation.lgbce.org.uk.

And a reminder that a casual vacancy again exists for a new Parish Councillor.  The next meeting will be held on Monday 16 January when we shall be setting the precept for the coming year.

Footpaths

from “Some Notes on Needham” by the late Cuthbert Mather

In earlier days footpaths would be used mainly by farmworkers, postmen, churchgoers and schoolchildren.  Not all of the footpaths are usable now but they are as follows:

  • High Road (near house147), Luck’s Mill Lane, for river & Weybread
  • High Road (by Mayland) to river & weir
  • High Road (opposite Brook Lane) to Mill Lane
  • High Road (by Village Hall) to Burnthouse Lane - between “Four Gates” and Brook Lane
  • High Road (at Wellsgate) to Harman’s Lane - once a cart track. This path is “Wells Lane”.
  • High Road (opposite Gunshaw Hall drive) to Wells Road; somehow known as “The Promised Land”.
  • “Monks’ Lane”: Harman’s Lane via Skeetsmere Cottage (this stretch is partly a watercourse since the great flood of 1912) to Tumbril Lane opposite Hogsty Lane (this stretch mainly ploughed up in about 1970)
  • Burnthouse Lane (at Skeetsmere House) to Starston Lane crossing Harman’s Lane
  • “Doles Lane”: Tumbril Lane via Doles Farm to junction on of Brook Lane and Kiln Lane (now partly a watercourse at southern end). A branch of this path - in use- emerges near Brabbin’s pond in Brook Lane (signposted)
  • Branching off Wells Lane to Starston Lane
  • Starston Lane to Gunshaw Hall and Harleston Common
  • Wells Road (by parish boundary) to river

I wonder how many of these footpaths are in existence now?- Ed

Accessibility of footpaths is often raised at Parish Council meetings.  If you are aware of footpaths that you would like to use but are becoming impassable the PC will arrange for the Council Rangers to clear the way.

Doorstep Scams

If you receive an unexpected caller on the doorstep please be extra vigilant and check that they are genuine.  Scammers are employing a variety of tricks to con people out of money and are particularly targeting the elderly.  These include:

Rogue traders that tell you that work needs urgently to be carried out on your house.  Do not believe them and if you are uncertain ask a reputable tradesman to investigate.  Alternatively, they may claim to represent a utility company needing access to your home.
Hard luck stories such as a car breakdown are used to gain access to your house to steal whilst your attention is diverted.
Phoney charity collectors will claim to be collecting money to support victims of a high profile disaster.
Bogus officials will present a fake ID or claim to represent an organisation that has an official government sounding title.  Never give your financial details to anyone on the doorstep as part of a supposed survey.

There have been reports of scammers becoming aggressive.  If this happens do not hesitate to dial 999 for the police.  Alternatively, if you have suspicions about anyone going door to door you can call 119 and report this.  If in doubt do not open the door.

Town Lands

There are ‘Town Lands’ belonging to Needham.  The estate originally consisted of several cottages and 24 acres of land, mostly granted in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.  The Town Lands charity has been in existence for 400 years.  The conditions of the Trust are that one-fifth of the income is apportioned for church purposes in the parish and four-fifths for the ‘common use of the town & parish of Needham and for the benefit of the poor’.  Of late this non-ecclesiastical share has been given mainly by vouchers for food, clothing and fuel to the pensioners of the parish.
from Some Notes on Needham by the late Cuthbert Mather

(grants can still applied for from the Town Lands Trust)

Needham Carpet Bowls Club

Since our last report we have only played one league match which was a home match against Brockdish. We were the winners of all games, gaining 9 points.  We have five more matches to play and this will conclude the Winter League.

In the second round of the Knockout Cup we have been drawn against Barnham Broom on an away and home basis. The home match will be played on Friday 6 January and the away match will be on Monday 23 January.

Our Annual Dinner presentation Evening will take place on Saturday 28 January at Needham Red Lion.  Congratulations to the following winners:

From the Editor

The annual Village BBQ was a great success.  There was a good turn out and the weather and food were wonderful. It was a really good Village social event.  Do look at the centre page spread of some of the photos taken at the BBQ. Sadly, it seems that such events may not be happening in the future as the Village Hall Committee struggles to organise events with so few members despite numerous heartfelt appeals for more people to step forward and help to keep  Needham a vibrant village. If you aren’t sure what a valuable asset the Village Hall is please read Pauline Spinlove’s piece elsewhere in the Link and think about joining the committee!

On a similar note, there has been no interest so far in taking over the editorship of The Link.  I’m still on the look out for, if not a permanent replacement, some people who would be willing to act as ‘guest editors’ from time to time. Please contact me at needhamlink@gmail.com

It seems a little early but may I take this opportunity to wish all Needham residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Helen

Needham Village BBQ

Needham Action Group - You may have seen us!

Needham Action Group is currently carrying out a house to house ‘feasibility’ survey in order to find out residents’ requirements for an outdoor community space in the village. Thank you to those who have taken time to speak to us - Your opinions matter! And for those of you who were not home when we knocked, we would love to hear from you:  please contact us at greenigloos@gmail.com
So far we have had an extremely positive response and hope that as you share your ideas you will feel more involved in the project. Our next step is to hold a community mapping event where everyone can join in designing the area and work out precisely how we would like it to look! This is an exciting stage where you could really make your mark for the benefit of everyone!
During the survey we did get a few recurring questions, so here they are with some answers:

Q:There used to be a play area at the Village Hall, but it was taken down because no one used it. Why make another one?”
A:  Needham used to have an infant/toddler group that met regularly at the Village Hall and the previous play area was created with them in mind. Although it was small it was sufficient to entertain toddlers. Unfortunately in 2008, the playgroup moved to Brockdish and took some of the equipment, leaving inadequate facilities for anyone to use.  Needham Action Group plans to create something completely different that will appeal to people of all ages, from toddlers, to teens to parents to OAPs and everyone in between!

Q: “Where will it be, there isn’t really room in the Village Hall grounds?”
A: We agree that the Village Hall grounds are an important resource for events and functions. Instead we are talking to a local Trust who could provide land adjacent, increasing footfall to the Village Hall, highlighting its fantastic facilities and hopefully increasing bookings there.

Q: “What would it cost us?”
A: Incredibly, Needham Action Group will bear all of the costs: both in building and in maintaining through fundraising events and grants. This means there will be NO DIRECT COST to Needham residents or the Village Hall. In fact, this kind of enhancement to village facilities is proven to increase the value of properties locally, so everyone is a winner!

Q: “I don’t plan to use the park myself, why would I want to support it?”
A: An outdoor hub like this will help to strengthen the community, bringing people together and providing a place that people of all ages can meet and enjoy time outdoors together. This can only be a good thing!

Q: “We don’t see children in the village. How do you know there is a need?”
A: Needham Action Group has undertaken a survey from which we so far estimate there to be 45 child residents, not to mention all the grandchildren who visit regularly – they just aren’t seen because there is little reason for them to be in the street. Plus we have discovered that Brockdish children are often driven through Needham in order to get to facilities in Harleston. To promote relations with our neighbouring village, wouldn’t it be wonderful if they came here instead...and some may cycle rather than drive!

Q: “How will it benefit the children of the village?”
A: From the survey, we have discovered that Needham children attend a wide number of different schools from Pulham, Dickleburgh, Hoxne, Mendham and Fressingfield to Harleston, Bungay and Framlingham to name a few. They need a place to meet up and develop friendships locally. Also older children need an opportunity to develop their independence by meeting friends away from home, but at a safe distance (and not have to cross the treacherous A143).

Q: “So what’s in it for older residents?”
A: Surveying the village has been a wonderful and fascinating experience - Thank you for opening your doors to us, and for taking the time to share your views! There have been some fantastic ideas – for example a herb garden and a coffee shed where residents can gather to enjoy being outdoors together over a drink and a slice of cake...with perhaps a spot of gardening if it takes their fancy; or a perimeter nature walk for dog lovers and those in need of a leg stretch and some fresh air!

There are many, many other wonderful ideas, so please contact us if you would like to let us know what you think or voice any concerns: Needham Action Group at greenigloos@gmail.com

Also: Keep an eye out in future Link issues for our exciting MAPPING EVENT!

Needham Parish Council Meeting

Needham Parish Council meeting - 26th September

The Parish Council met on 26 September.

Following the resignation of Denis Tavner earlier this year the Parish Council was able to advertise a Casual Vacancy.  At the meeting held on 26th September we were pleased to have interest from three residents, any one of whom we should have been delighted to invite onto the Parish Council, but a vote had to be taken and I am pleased to report that Heidi Williams has joined us as a Parish Councillor.

At the same meeting, Sylvia Miller announced she would stand down as a Parish Councillor.  Sylvia has been on the Parish Council and at the centre of village activities for many years and we are very sorry to be losing her.  We are grateful for all the time and effort she has put into the community.  However, it does mean that there is again a Casual Vacancy.  While Parish Councils are the bottom rung of local government we do have a say in local matters and have valuable links to the District and County Councils as well as police and highways authorities.  If you are interested in joining as a Parish Councillor please contact me for more details.

Concerns were voiced at the meeting by a resident at the hazard of crossing the A143 at the roundabout when walking to Harleston and it was agreed the highways authority should be approached for suggestions to make the crossing safer.  Sadly, the initial response was that there are no practical steps that can be taken.  However, if other residents have similar concerns this is a matter that the Parish Council would pursue further.

The next meeting, which is preceded by a public forum, will be at 7.30 on Monday 21st November in the annex to the Village Hall.

Andrew Major: Chairman

Needham Coronation Village Hall

BBQ - 11 SEPTEMBER

The BBQ was very well attended and we could not have asked for better weather.

A big thank-you to everyone who very kindly donated raffle and tombola prizes, and to those people who brought along desserts and cakes on the day.

A special thank-you also to the following people:

¬ John, Angie and Chris, for running the bar.
¬ Sally and Georgina for helping with the refreshments in the kitchen.
¬ Helen and Georgie for assisting Andrew on the BBQ.
¬ Richard Coe for providing parking facilities in his field.
¬ Glyn and Sandra Jordan for the loan of their marquee.

¬ The many other people who kindly gave their time to help with the setting up and clearing away.

Village Hall Committee

Save our Hall!

Needham Village Hall already has bookings for 2017.  It is used for the Art Group, Whist Drives, the Needlework Group, Bowling, Martial Arts, Pilates, Performing Arts Groups, the Wine Guild, Council Elections, Parish Council meetings, Books & Jigsaws Library, Children’s Parties, Village Events etc…
A list of regular events can be found on the VH notice board.

A great deal of money has been spent on the upkeep of the Hall over the last few years.  If it were to close it would be a great loss to the people of Needham and surrounding villages.  This would not be due to the lack of money but to the lack of people willing to serve on the committee.

If you are willing to help please contact Andrew Major on 01379 852958 or come to the next meeting which will be on Monday 28 November at 7:30pm.

Needham Carpet Bowls Club

Since our last report the Winter League has commenced. Our first home match  against Wortwell on 16 September was won by 3 games to one draw. Our next match on 23 September against Occuld ended as a draw but Occuld were the winners on shots.

We played a friendly match at Needham against Rumdurgh Bowls Club on 26 October and a return match will be arranged for next year.

In the knockout cup we were drawn to play Garboldisham - home & away but due to illness they had to withdraw from the cup matches so we automatically go through to the 2nd round.

On 30 September we held our Presentation of Trophies, Social & Quiz Evening at Alburgh Village Hall. Around 15 teams took part in the quiz.  Needham entered 2 teams.  Harleston Howlers came 3rd and Needham Nudgers came 5th.

Our club evenings are on Wednesdays starting at 7:30.  All equipment is provided and new members would be most welcome.

Needham Village BBQ

From the Editor

The annual Needham Village BBQ is being held on Sunday 11 September.  It’s always a very enjoyable village social event and the Village Hall committee have put in a request for Indian Summer sunshine.  There are more details elsewhere in the Link.

Also in the Link this month is a report on fundraising for All Hallows Hospice in Ditchingham.  Congratulations to the brave duo, Lewis Williams from Needham and Lewis Robinson from Weybread, on their skydive last month.  Photos of the event are on the centre pages. Thanks to their bravery they raised the sum of £392.00 for the hospice. The total raised on the day was £710.50.

On a personal note, I should like to thank those in the village who sponsored me in the Pink Ladies Tractor Run also last month.  With the help of friends and family, I raised the amazing total of £780 for Cancer Research UK.

If you would like to contribute anything to the Link I should be delighted to hear from you.  Please send your articles, notices or letters to needhamlink@gmail.com

I should be even more pleased to hear from anyone who is interested in sharing the editorship of the Link.  Again, please contact me on the Link email.

Helen

Events like the Queen’s 90th Birthday Party, the Christmas Dinner and the forthcoming BBQ are run by volunteers.  Extra help is always welcome.  If you can spare an hour or two to help at the BBQ either on the day or leading up to the event please email the Link at needhamlink@gmail.com or seek out a committee member.

The committee would love to hear from you!

Thank You....

…to John & Pauline Seaman for clearing weeds and rubbish off the steps in Brook Lane & Upper Brook Lane as they had become hazardous.  It is not the first time that this couple have done this.  Apparently, when the bypass was constructed the council promised to keep this path and others clear.

So, a big thank you to John & Pauline!

Red Lion Sky Dive

Lewis Williams & Lewis ROBINSON

take to the sky & jump for glory

Saturday 9 July

Lewis Robinson
Lewis Williams

It was a good turn out at Ellough Airport on Saturday 9 July to support ‘The Two Lewis’ Jump for Glory’!
It started to rain just as they were boarding the plane at 9:30am to get strapped to a complete stranger and jump out of a plane at 12,000 feet into the icy air - all in the aid of All Hallows Hospice.

Well done to both of them for being so brave.

Lewis Williams raised £222.00
Lewis Robinson raised £170.00

Thanks to Sandra & Glyn Jordan for their generous donation of £400 to pay for the skydive.

The Red Lion had arranged a superb brunch for all those who attended.  Half the proceeds of the brunch went into the fund.

Thank you to all who filled out the sponsorship forms to raise money. The total raised on the day was £710.50.  This did not include the Jordans’ donation as this was paid directly to the airport.

Thanks to Glyn Jordan for the photographs

Red Lion Charity Beach Party

What a great day!  The sun shone all day.  There was fantastic music from The Vibe City Band, great food and a real family party atmosphere.  There was even a sandcastle competition for the children as well as face painting and a bouncy castle.

Thanks to all the locals who donated articles for the Auction of Promises and for the cash donations received.  There was also a cash raffle which was appropriately won by a Needham resident who regularly attends the monthly coffee mornings,

The amount raised on the day was £685.00.  We can now hand over the sum of £2795.00 which means they can now purchase the special piece of equipment  they needed so much.  What a great achievement.

Well done to everyone who has supported this effort and a very big thank you to the Red Lion team of helpers.

Since we started the coffee mornings in June 2014, we have raised over £5000.00.  They have been a great success with more and more people turning up each time.  It’s a really good village social occasion.

Thank you

John & Angie Morrish

I should like to add thanks and congratulations to John & Angie and the other supporters who have worked so hard to make the monthly coffee mornings such a great success.
Ed
