Needham Village BBQ

From the Editor

The annual Needham Village BBQ is being held on Sunday 11 September.  It’s always a very enjoyable village social event and the Village Hall committee have put in a request for Indian Summer sunshine.  There are more details elsewhere in the Link.

Also in the Link this month is a report on fundraising for All Hallows Hospice in Ditchingham.  Congratulations to the brave duo, Lewis Williams from Needham and Lewis Robinson from Weybread, on their skydive last month.  Photos of the event are on the centre pages. Thanks to their bravery they raised the sum of £392.00 for the hospice. The total raised on the day was £710.50.

On a personal note, I should like to thank those in the village who sponsored me in the Pink Ladies Tractor Run also last month.  With the help of friends and family, I raised the amazing total of £780 for Cancer Research UK.

If you would like to contribute anything to the Link I should be delighted to hear from you.  Please send your articles, notices or letters to needhamlink@gmail.com

I should be even more pleased to hear from anyone who is interested in sharing the editorship of the Link.  Again, please contact me on the Link email.

Events like the Queen’s 90th Birthday Party, the Christmas Dinner and the forthcoming BBQ are run by volunteers.  Extra help is always welcome.  If you can spare an hour or two to help at the BBQ either on the day or leading up to the event please email the Link at needhamlink@gmail.com or seek out a committee member.

The committee would love to hear from you!

Thank You....

…to John & Pauline Seaman for clearing weeds and rubbish off the steps in Brook Lane & Upper Brook Lane as they had become hazardous.  It is not the first time that this couple have done this.  Apparently, when the bypass was constructed the council promised to keep this path and others clear.

So, a big thank you to John & Pauline!

Red Lion Sky Dive

Lewis Williams & Lewis ROBINSON

take to the sky & jump for glory

Saturday 9 July

Lewis Robinson
Lewis Williams

It was a good turn out at Ellough Airport on Saturday 9 July to support ‘The Two Lewis’ Jump for Glory’!
It started to rain just as they were boarding the plane at 9:30am to get strapped to a complete stranger and jump out of a plane at 12,000 feet into the icy air - all in the aid of All Hallows Hospice.

Well done to both of them for being so brave.

Lewis Williams raised £222.00
Lewis Robinson raised £170.00

Thanks to Sandra & Glyn Jordan for their generous donation of £400 to pay for the skydive.

The Red Lion had arranged a superb brunch for all those who attended.  Half the proceeds of the brunch went into the fund.

Thank you to all who filled out the sponsorship forms to raise money. The total raised on the day was £710.50.  This did not include the Jordans’ donation as this was paid directly to the airport.

Thanks to Glyn Jordan for the photographs

Red Lion Charity Beach Party

What a great day!  The sun shone all day.  There was fantastic music from The Vibe City Band, great food and a real family party atmosphere.  There was even a sandcastle competition for the children as well as face painting and a bouncy castle.

Thanks to all the locals who donated articles for the Auction of Promises and for the cash donations received.  There was also a cash raffle which was appropriately won by a Needham resident who regularly attends the monthly coffee mornings,

The amount raised on the day was £685.00.  We can now hand over the sum of £2795.00 which means they can now purchase the special piece of equipment  they needed so much.  What a great achievement.

Well done to everyone who has supported this effort and a very big thank you to the Red Lion team of helpers.

Since we started the coffee mornings in June 2014, we have raised over £5000.00.  They have been a great success with more and more people turning up each time.  It’s a really good village social occasion.

Thank you

John & Angie Morrish

I should like to add thanks and congratulations to John & Angie and the other supporters who have worked so hard to make the monthly coffee mornings such a great success.

Needham Carpet Bowls Club

Since our last report the draw for the Winter League has taken place. Our club will be competing against Brockdish, Kenninghall, Occold, Syleham & Wortwell.  In the knockout cup we have been drawn against Garboldisham.
All the matches will be on a home & away basis.

On Tuesday 2 August we were invited to play a friendly match against Blythburgh Bowls Club which was played at Wangford Community Centre.  It was the 100th friendly match that Blythburgh had played in the 13 years since their club had started.  Ten members from Needham took part in the very enjoyable evening. We will be inviting them to visit Needham at a later date.

Club evenings are every Wednesday in the Vilage Hall starting at 7:30 pm.

Good bowling and Good luck for the Winter League!

Needham Parish Council

Parish Council meeting held on 18 July 2016

You may have been left puzzled by the leaflets that recently came through your letterbox as part of a consultation exercise on devolution for Norfolk and Suffolk.  Fortunately, our County Councillor, Martin Wilby, was at the Public Forum to give an update on the progress of discussions and outline the financial benefits that could result from devolution.

All the Councils in Suffolk, along with Norfolk County Council have voted in favour.  South Norfolk Council and Broadland have also voted in favour, but other Norfolk authorities including Norwich City Council have decided not to go ahead with a combined authority at this stage.

If devolution goes ahead a single mayor will be elected for all the participating authorities in Norfolk and Suffolk.   The first election would be in 2017.

As I reported in the last edition of the Link there is now a Casual Vacancy on the Parish Council.  The meetings provide a valuable link for the village both with our District and County Councils and also with the Highways Authority and Police and so have often been able to obtain advice and assistance for villagers.  We are also statutory consultees on any planning applications in the Parish.  We should welcome enquiries from anyone who would be interested in joining the Parish Council.  We meet on a Monday every two months at 7.30 in the evening.

The next meeting will be in the Village Hall Annex on Monday 26th September.
