Needham Carpet Bowls Club

Since our last report, we are very pleased to welcome two new members - Angela and Dennis Taylor.                  

In the second round of the Knock-Out Cup, we played against Barnham Broom on a home and away basis.  We were the overall winners and are now through to the third round. 

In the Waveney League, we won a home match against Syleham, but lost away to Wortwell.

Our Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening was held on 31 January at the Needham Red Lion.  A very pleasant evening was enjoyed by members and guests, and the club trophies were presented by Frances Burton, our Chairman, to the following winners:

Mixed Doubles Cup: Jean Youell & John Kuzmic

John was particularly pleased to have won the Gents' Singles Cup, as his father had also won this in 2002.

Our club evenings are held every Wednesday at Needham village hall, starting at 7.30pm.  New members would be most welcome.  Fees are only £1.50 per evening, and all equipment is provided.  No previous bowling experience is necessary. 

Carpet bowls is for all ages.  Do come along and join us.

Needham Village Library

We have a library in the village hall, where you can take out books and jigsaws on loan free of charge.  The library is open on Thursdays from 2.00pm - 4.00pm.  Come in and have a look -  just pop in or stay for a chat.  FREE tea, coffee and a biscuit are available. 

When we receive donations of books and jigsaws the existing stock is sorted and goes to charity.

Memories of Cycling in the War

I started cycling in war-torn London.  I wasn't old enough to be called up and I vividly recall the carnage of the blitz, V1s and V2s.  Food was on ration and in short supply but, as I had a strenuous job (Thames Lighterman), I received double rations.  

Cycling clubs lacked young men who were off fighting for peace and therefore clubs were made up of older members from denuded clubs.  When the boys came home they were so lean.  One, I recall was so thin, a "bag of bones", hollow cheeks - the colour of a lemon.  He had been a prisoner of the Japanese.

Mass motorisation was still to come and you could traverse major highways in complete safety.  If you saw four vehicles it was considered to be a traffic jam!

Friends of St Peter's Church

Friends of St Peter's church would like to thank everyone who took part in the Christmas/New Year quiz, and hope that you all enjoyed it.

We sold 55 quizzes and 12 entries were returned.  The answers have been checked and the results are as follows:

Ø  Third Place:              Janet Kefford, Charles Chenery and Jean Youell. Score - 45

There were no correct answers to the last question.

We would also like to thank David for putting the quiz together for us and Olive and Lucy for checking the answers.

The Friends hold several meetings during the year, and our main aim is to raise money for the upkeep of this ancient building.  Our last project was the installation of a permanent ramp for wheelchair users.
