Needham Village BBQ 2015

From the Editor

Firstly, I should like to thank all the Needham villagers who were generous  enough to sponsor me in July’s Ladies Pink Tractor Road Run.  You helped me to raise over £600 for Cancer Research UK.  It was a miserable wet day and by lunchtime all the drivers were soaked to the skin and chilled to the marrow but we were encouraged by the fact that we were doing it for such a worthwhile cause.  So, a big thank you!

This year’s Village BBQ was held on Sunday 16 August.  There was a very good turnout and the newly built permanent barbecue was very successful with Andrew Major being ably assisted by Georgie.  Between them they managed to cook all the beef burgers & sausages and to keep the queue down to a minimum!  The afternoon entertainment was provided  by a very good six piece traditional band called Shipshape. I should like to thank all the members of the Village Hall Management Committee who worked so hard to organise another great village event.  Because of limitations of space the committee is not able to thank everyone who helped by name but would like me to express their gratitude.

The Village Hall Committee would like to hear from anyone who would like to join the committee.  Please contact Celia Snaith  on 01379 851987

Congratulations to Michael & Lisa Massey of the Red Lion on their recent marriage.  On behalf of the villagers of Needham, may I wish you a long and happy future together.

Finally, is there anyone in the village who would like to take on the Editorship of this prestigious publication?  I am coming to the end of my 4th year as Editor and feel that now is the time to give the opportunity to someone else.
At the time of writing two people have volunteered to be guest editors for a couple of editions but we do still need a permanent editor so If you would like information about what being the editor involves, please get in touch either by email needhamlink@gmail.com or by phone 01379 852958.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Needham Carpet Bowls Club

The AGM was held at Old Buckenham Village Hall where the draw for the Winter League took place.  Our club will be playing against Syleham, Occuld, Kenninghall, Brockdish & Wortwell on a Home/Away basis.  In the knockout cup we have been drawn against Occuld again on a Home/Away basis.
The Summer Presentation & Quiz evening will be held at Alburgh Village Hall On Friday 25 September.

On 14 August we played a friendly match against Pulham Market.  We won 3 games and lost one game.  It was a very enjoyable evening and we are hoping for a return match in the near future.

You are very welcome to join us at our club evening which are held every Wednesday in the Village Hall starting at 7:30. Bowls is a game for all ages. Fees are £1.50 to include all equipment, tea/coffee and biscuits.

Good bowling & good luck for the 2015/16 season.

Harleston Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT)

Since the last edition there has been no crime recorded in Needham.

We have responded to five calls within the parish where residents have requested police assistance..

Please be aware that we have had a number of calls about phone scams in the area.  We are being told that people are calling pretending to be from Microsoft or from a mobile phone provider.  They try to convince people to log onto their home computer and then type in a number of given commands.  By doing this you give the caller access to your computer, personal data and even bank details.  STOP and THINK if you get a call of this nature before you agree to do anything. If you have elderly friends or relatives please make them aware of the danger of these type of calls.

If there is any information you would like to see from us on a regular basis please let us know and we will aim to include it.

To contact Norfolk Constabulary dial 101.  Always dial 999 in an emergency.

Needham Coronation Village Hall

Help! Your village hall needs you!

As you will appreciate, there are regular jobs that need to be undertaken at the Village Hall during the year.  e.g:
internal painting and decorating
internal maintenance - odd jobs
setting up the hall for events e.g. Christmas Dinner

The Committee members are looking for volunteers from the village community to help them with the above.  We would, therefore, be pleased to hear from anyone who would be willing to take part in the occasional working party to complete various tasks.
We would also like to hear from anyone who can offer specialist skills/equipment/tools and would be willing to provide assistance if the need arose - e.g. electrical & plumbing work.
If you are able to assist or would like further information, please contact either Del or Celia Snaith on 01379 851987

The Village Hall Management Committee would like to thank:

  • Diane for organising the teas, coffees and desserts
  • Everyone who donated prizes for the raffle and tom bola
  • People who donated desserts
  • A special thank you from the chef to Georgie for her invaluable help on the BBQ
  • Emily for being so helpful all day
  • Angela Taylor for helping with the games
  • Peter Blake & the Red Lion for their kind donations
  • Gary & Mary from ‘Coronation Cottage Plants’ for cutting the grass and providing floral displays near the BBQ - all done at short notice.
  • And many other people, too numerous to mention, who gave their time so generously at the BBQ

Grants
I’m pleased to advise that the Committee has been successful in securing grants from The Adnams’ Charity and South Norfolk Council.  These grants will go towards meeting the costs of essential repairs to the Village Hall roof.
